Minicoy Island is located on the southernmost part among the groups of islands in Lakshadweep. It is the second largest and also one of the most visited destinations in Lakshadweep. Previously a part of Maldives, it was taken over by the British in 1908 and later became a part of Indian Union in 1956. The place is also a perfect spot for tuna fishing and holds several factories for tuna canning including ice plants and cold storages that attract a good number of visitors.

Attractions
Lighthouse- One of the chief attractions of this place is a tall lighthouse
that measures to a height of about 300 ft. The lighthouse is one of the oldest in the region, as it was structured by the British in 1885. The lighthouse is also known as the South Side Lighthouse as it is located on the southern part of the island. A major attraction of this tower is that as you climb to its summit you will be able to enjoy the breath-taking views of the Lakshadweep Island, Virgin Island and the Arabian Sea. The white sands and coconut trees surrounding this structure adds to the attraction of this lighthouse.
Ancient Remains- This scenic crescent-shaped island is also believed to contain primeval remains belonging to its Buddhist past that dates back to around 800 years. An archaeological survey held here in the 1980s resulted in discovery of some of the contents of these remains, such as a Buddhist stupa and some other related structures. These primeval remains are referred by the name ‘Salliballu’.
Cultures- An interesting part about the Mincoy Island is its culture, which is completely different from the ones
found in the other islands of Lakshadweep. The place is mainly inhabited by Malikun locals and their main language is Mahl, which is common to that of Maldives. However, there are few natives who even speak Malayalam. An interesting part about the natives of this island is that they have a matrilineal society, where family descent is traced through female line. In such type of society, a man has to either live in his wife’s or his mother’s house. Due to this, the island is also known as ‘Female Island’. Each village of this island has a male and female mayor, known as Bodukaaka and Bodudhata. These male and female mayors are responsible for the complete conduct of their respective villages. The villagers also perform traditional dance forms, like Dandi and Lava Dance during the time of festivals, which are a treat to watch.
Boats- Mincoy Island is also popular for its availability though boats with a transparent fiber bottom, which takes the travelers right to the center of the ocean and allows them to observe the fascinating marine life of the region.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit this place is during the months of October to May.

As for accommodation in Minicoy, there is a 20 bedded Minicoy Resort, which is a best option to stay at this place. The resort is located in the southern part of the island, close to the lighthouse and its every cottage is equipped with open to sky bathroom facilities.
